The Light- Closer to God Newsletter

Do you know when you take a moment and meditate on just one verse of scripture, your whole day can turn around?

Yes, it can happen. Today, for instance.

There are times in life when situations become bleak.

Things may go differently than planned, or you might receive bad news. It can feel as if your life is growing darker.

This happens to all of us at some time in our lives.

You feel like giving up because it seems like the odds are against you.

I've been there countless times, and that's where the Word of God shines through.

If you believe in God's love for you and the power of His Word in your life, darkness will disappear.

"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."

John 1:5 · New International Version

Here's a Brief Background...

This verse is from the Gospel of John in the New Testament. John was among the 12 Apostles and one of the few in Jesus's inner circle.

He was a prolific writer with a unique style and perspective compared to the other Gospels, primarily focusing on the significance of the Word of God and how Jesus embodied it.

The context leading up to this passage emphasizes how Jesus is life and the Word; he is the "light" of all humanity throughout eternity.

Let's Break It Down...

The light shines in the darkness,

This simple sentence holds deep meaning. Darkness can cause you to hesitate because you don’t know where to go.

Why is that? It's because you can’t see the path ahead.

However, when you see light in the darkness, you gain a sense of direction and know how to move forward.

Light pierces through the pitch-black darkness.

And darkness has not overcome it.

In simple terms, darkness cannot extinguish the light.

Even from a distance, a flickering light can still be seen.

Navigating through the dark of night, sailors at sea relied on lighthouses for guidance.

Darkness cannot overpower light, and while it can be dark in areas where light is absent, the presence of even a small light can always be detected.

Take Some Action...

When times get "dark," what can we do to bring "Jesus," the light of the world, into our lives? Here are some ways to brighten things up...

Find Hope in Adversity.

No matter what challenges (darkness) we face in life, light and goodness will prevail. We must embrace this simple truth when difficult situations arise, knowing in our hearts that darkness will not overcome our "light."

Be a Light.

Darkness spreads when there is no light. Others need light in their life to overcome the challenges that face them. You can spread the Word and become a light for someone else. Be a beacon of kindness and support, and love those around you. Darkness will disappear.

Strengthen your Faith.

During difficult times, find strength in God's Word. Read Scripture and apply its teachings to your life. Trust that God's light is always present when you seek Him, offering the comfort and security that only He can provide.

Personal Reflection.

Take some time to reflect inwardly through prayer and devotion to the One who created you and loves you more than anything. Your existence holds great significance to God. He is your loving Father, and His Son, Jesus, was sent to be the Light in your life, offering comfort and guidance.

To Sum it All Up...

We all need Jesus more in our lives.

He is the light and has overcome the challenges of this world.

He is the light that darkness cannot overcome.

When things in our lives don't go right, we experience suffering, challenges, and defeats. We need to turn to Him.

Our light in the darkness.

He will shine brightly for us, guiding us along the way.

His Word illuminates our path, showing us how to live better lives by loving one another instead of succumbing to the pain and confusion that darkness brings.

Here's a Prayer For You...

Lord Jesus, my refuge and Savior, I seek You now with all I am.

Be my guiding light in this world’s shadowed corners, for lately, the weight of pain, confusion, and defeat feels heavy on my heart.

Darkness presses in, yet I know You are the light of the world—a light no darkness can overcome.

So, shine brightly upon my path, helping me face the challenges ahead with courage and grace.

Surround me with Your love, dispelling every shadow and hatred that burdens my soul.

Let Your love fill me so fully that I may carry Your light to others, bringing hope to those who are lost and weary.

In Your Word and Your light alone, I am saved and set free. Amen.

I hope you can apply today's verse and message to your life and journey.

Please share this with someone that needs to hear it.

His Word is always available when you need it.

All you have to do is reach out, find a Bible, and read some scripture, and the Light will shine.

My goal is to bring the Word of God to you, one verse at a time, so that you can get Closer to God each day.

Have a blessed day out there, and remember, I am praying for you; please continue to pray for me.

Merry Christmas! For many, this holiday is considered the best of the year, particularly for Christians worldwide, as it marks the birth of Jesus, the savior of humanity. This week, I am stepping away from my usual format of applying a scripture verse to our lives, as it is now the best time to reflect on when the Word became flesh and dwelled among us. Jesus was born and saved us from a life of sin. This means everything to us, as this marks the beginning of Jesus's humble journey. Let's go...

The Christmas season is definitely upon us. Can you feel it? This is a joyous time of year for so many, but this is a hard time to get through for countless others. The stress and consumerism surrounding the next two weeks can be overwhelming and completely overshadow this season's true meaning. For Christian believers, this is when we celebrate the birth of the Savior Jesus Christ by spreading the good news to all who want to hear. This is the ideal time to express our faith and show...

Thank you for taking time today to make God's Word a part of your life. One thing I've experienced in my life is noticing how many people seem so lost at times. They go day to day wondering if what they do makes a difference. Is that you? If so, today's verse will definitely help. When you find yourself lost while trying to reach a destination on a road or trail, using a map or GPS is the most effective method for finding your way. But what about when we are lost in life? What map or advice...
