Humble Beginning- Closer to God Newsletter

Merry Christmas!

For many, this holiday is considered the best of the year, particularly for Christians worldwide, as it marks the birth of Jesus, the savior of humanity.

This week, I am stepping away from my usual format of applying a scripture verse to our lives, as it is now the best time to reflect on when the Word became flesh and dwelled among us.

Jesus was born and saved us from a life of sin.

This means everything to us, as this marks the beginning of Jesus's humble journey.

Let's go to the New Testament and part of the Christmas story in the Gospel of Luke.

"She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger because there was no lodging available for them."

Luke 2:7 · New Living Translation

Here's a Brief Background...

Luke was the author of this passage, and only he and the Gospel of Matthew documented the story of Jesus' birth.

Luke was a physician by trade and worked alongside the Apostle Paul.

He was known for his meticulous attention to detail and for emphasizing the compassionate nature of Jesus in his writings.

He is thought to have gathered information from eyewitness accounts of the apostles and other disciples to create an orderly account of Jesus' life and teachings.

This verse highlights themes of humility, the faithfulness of God, and the fulfillment of prophecy.

Let's Look At It Closer...

Typically, I prefer to analyze a verse line by line and focus on its meaning.

To truly appreciate this week's verse, it's essential to read it and consider its deeper meaning.

Mary gave birth to her first son, which is significant for her.

She was a virgin, and the Holy Spirit conceived Jesus.

I'd like you to reflect on how this experience was undoubtedly new and profound for her.

After giving birth to him, Mary had no homemade blanket or other conventional means to wrap the baby.

She used what was available—strips of cloth most likely used for cleaning the stable and then laid him in a manger.

Now, a manger is not a crib or bassinet; it is a feeding trough used to hold food for animals. It most likely isn’t the cleanest or most comfortable place, either.

Why were they in a place for livestock or a cave?

There was no regular place, such as a room or house, for them to settle when they arrived.

This was all they could find—a stable with animals. Not the most hospitable place to give birth to a child.

It was all they had, and it worked.

Let's Reflect On It...

This verse allows us to reflect on the profound way our Savior entered the world: simple and humble.

For hundreds of years, the prophecies told of a king coming into the world and that his kingdom would last forever.

For generations, people believed this king would enter the world with grand accommodations and more.

This was not the case, and it's what makes Christmas so unique.

Right down to the manger being a symbol of humility and simplicity.

Jesus was not born in a palace but in the most modest of surroundings.

The Christmas story highlights the theme of how God is accessible to all of us, no matter our social or economic status.

Through this narrative of humble beginnings, we see God's desire to be present with humanity in our daily lives and ordinary circumstances.

Let's Pray Together...

Dear Heavenly Father,

The birth of Your Son, Jesus, is the greatest gift to humanity, a profound expression of Your love.

Help me pause in the midst of the season to truly celebrate this miracle.

Open my heart to see the beauty in His humble beginnings—a Savior who stepped into our world so we might know You more deeply and find You always near.

Through Jesus, You have made Yourself accessible to me, offering constant guidance and the light of Your Word to lead my path.

He was born to save us, bringing hope and redemption. Christmas is a celebration of His boundless love and the arrival of the Light that shatters the darkness.

With awe and gratitude, I worship You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

This week, let's come together to joyfully celebrate the humble birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Christmas holds a special meaning in spreading goodwill to humanity. I hope you share this holiday season with those you love and cherish.

Share this message and more through His Word.

My thoughts and prayers are always with you.

Wishing you the merriest Christmas!
